(FM1169) A new ASTM standard banning drop-sides and strengthening regulations on crib slat strength has been published. This means that in states where the ASTM standard is referenced in the Children's Product Safety Act (without a year version listed), drop-side cribs are now considered to be unsafe cribs and can't be sold. These include Illinois, Vermont and New Jersey.
KIDS in Danger Executive Director, Nancy Cowles and the Illinois Attorney General's office has been working hard on this update. While the ban on selling drop-sided cribs does not necessitate a recall, parents should be aware that drop-sided cribs will no longer be sold by either retail stores or second-hand stores in Illinois.
This is an enormous change for Illinois families. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and others will now be working on creating new standards.
Stay tuned.
